Episode 47 of Upon Further Review!

This week we talk dance, magic and geeks (not necessarily in that order) on Episode 47 of Upon Further Review!  In this episode we thank our loyal listeners before moving on the the review portion of the show:  first, we show off our cool moves with our review of Dance Dance Revolution; second, we delve into the world of Hogwarts with our take on the Harry Potter books; and finally, we take a look at geek culture as we review the Just Push Play podcast.  As always, we are grateful for your ideas and suggestions, and as always, we ask that you keep them coming and spread the word!  (As usual, podsafe intro music is provided by Sharif (“You’re My Girl”), outro by David Henderson (“We Gotta Go”).)

Howdy! Thanks for the review. I will definitely have the crew listen and possibly make some tweaks to the show to make the segments more palatable. Easier to find as well.:)

The Halo 3 to Jack Thompson thing exemplifies a regular occurrence on the show as Jack is a lawyer from Florida who blames all crime that kids commit on video games. That’s kind of why we stick him in the Video Games section. I can see now though how confusing that could be when what was addressed was his run in with the Florida Bar over objectionable material being introduced into public record. Great show, thanks again and have a wonderful vacation!

No problem, Gary, and thanks for the kind words. Now that you explain it, it all makes more sense. Now if we had an XBox, we could see whether Halo 3 really is all it’s cracked up to be… :)

Please keep listening and, if you’re so inclined, spread the word on your show! Best of luck with it going forward.

    Hey guys!

Thank you so much for the review — it’s great to get input, and Gary and I are already putting some things into motion based on your suggestions. By the way, I hope you don’t mind, but I really love how you guys have the NPR voice! Makes me happy to listen to your show.

Well it took a week, but I finally got to hear your latest episode.
I’m a little surprised by your review of the Harry Potter phenomena. I must confess that from the 2nd book up until the middle of book number 7 I was rooting for Harry to die, but I would think the cultural diffusion and the surge in reading by young adults should probably factor in to a higher rating.

Thanks for show! I enjoy each episode.

Ana: No problem, and thanks for mentioning us on your show…we’re glad our suggestions were helpful, and hope you’ll keep listening. As for the NPR voice…we’ll take it as a compliment, so long as you don’t mean the Saturday Night Live version of NPR!

Opinionated: We mostly agree with you…but you weren’t satisfied with an 8? I mean, we like Harry Potter, but it’s no North Shore Animal League… ;)

Thanks as always for the feedback, and please keep it coming!

Excellent, yet again! Great show, Greg & Clea!!

Not many notes this time, but I like the idea of dance dance revolution — getting closer to picking it up sometime. The one I’m really curious about is Guitar Hero. Any opinions on that one yet?

I’m a Harry Potter conscientious objector, but still liked your review. It’s not anything that has to do with the subject matter or anything (not a bible beater who hates fantasy and thinks it’s all devil’s work…), just never really caught on to that phenomena. Saw the first movie, it was kind of forgettable to me. Tried to read the book, but was really disinterested. Still, the fact that it re-introduced reading to lots of children and young adults is so cool. Also thoroughly respect Ms. Rowling knowing when to quit, even though she could have certainly ridden the commercial wave for a long time.

Like the idea of “Just Push Play”. Always appreciate another extension into the podcast world!

Getting anxious as you approach show 50! Can’t wait to hear more!! See you on 48!!!

Well, we’ve played Guitar Hero and like it, though not as much as some of the others. It’s really funny to watch real guitar players play it–one of our friends was screwing up “Sweet Child of Mine” and said “I used to cover this song with my touring band!” in frustration…funny stuff. And although we’re not Harry Potter groupies, overall we think her work is pretty good. (And we would be happy to have our review mentioned on her site…not at all for any desire for exposure, of course!)

Thanks as always for the comments!
