Episode 20 of Upon Further Review, Special Edition!
Once again we’ve returned with opinions, thoughts and friendly suggestions with Episode 20–a Special Edition of Upon Further Review! In this show we thank friends, commentators and listeners before launching into the meat of the episode: we left the friendly confines of Eagle Studios recently and took a (short) road trip to the Digital Life Convention in New York City, a electronics/gadget/game fest for everyone’s inner tech-fan, and so in this episode we look at a number of games, items, and tech trends which we saw at the convention (including screen protectors, the Tablet PC, Final Fantasy XII, Neverwinter Nights II, and Hellgate London among others) before wrapping up with our podcast segment, a review of the Propadata Films vidcasting company. Thanks as always for your comments, suggestions, feedback and of course your listening time–and please spread the word! (As usual, podsafe intro music is provided by Sharif (“You’re My Girl”), outro by David Henderson (“We Gotta Go”).)

A BIG congratulations to Greg and Clea for making the big 2-0.
Your show remains one of my favourites and I look forward to it each week.
May there be another 200!
Best Wishes,
Tim
Thanks, Tim…we very much appreciate it. We feel so, er, double the age of ten now. :) But seriously, thanks to one of our favorite listeners…hope others are enjoying what we’re doing as much as you have!

Thanks for the tip about the shield zone protector thingies…I am a little bit obsessive about trying to keep my gadgets scratch-free.
Enjoy your 21st…don’t drink too much champagne though…it’ll go to your head.
Thanks very much, and we’ll try to take it easy. We’ve already started to track down a “designated reviewer” for that show, so at least we won’t be doing anything too dangerous… :)

Woo hoo! 20th episode and it was just as great as the first 19!!! Or better?!?!
Loved the discussion around Hellgate: London. I’d like to recommend you check out the site www. storytron .com. IF it works the way its creator intends, it would be the next generation in computer games (hopefully video games): a game that truly builds on player choices, rather than a pre-designed branching narrative or something that seems to have choice, but is really linear. It’s still way early in its development, but the concept is really interesting. Would love to know what you think about it (not necessarily on the show… here is just fine).
Can’t wait for the next 20! See you on legal #21!!!!

This sounds neat, particularly since (as you heard) I’m a huge fan of the story. The execution of the project seems a little vague to me…it’s not clear exactly how they intend to get to a game which is fully interactive and fully story-based. But I’m certainly hoping for the best…it sounds like it could be a tremendous project.
Greg
My thoughts, exactly, Greg. In its infancy, maybe an idea before its time, but worth keeping an eye on. Maybe something to look toward for post-retirement…
The execution is hard to understand, especially if you read their message boards (sounds like its still ending up as a branching narrative in its alpha testing trials). Might be a function of someone seeing the goal, but constrained by limited imaginations.
Thanks for the dialog! See ya!
