Episode 45 of Upon Further Review!

After a bit of a delay, this week we travel to the pizza parlor, the spaceport and the political arena in Episode 45 of Upon Further Review!  In this episode we herald the (almost) end of summer before moving on to the main event:  first, we take a slice in our review of pizza; second, we explore strange new worlds and seek out new life and new civilizations as we review the Star Trek franchise; and finally, we try not to take sides as we look at The Hawke and Dove Political Punditry Podcast.  As always, we appreciate all your feedback and suggestions, and as always we ask that you keep it coming–and of course, keep listening!  (As usual, podsafe intro music is provided by Sharif (“You’re My Girl”), outro by David Henderson (“We Gotta Go”).)

I hate to get all up in your face, but I can’t let you get away with telling your listeners to violate pizza without saying something.
Putting toppings on pizza is an abomination!
Maybe adding oregano, white pepper, black pepper, or red pepper is acceptable, but adding vegetables, fruits, or meat to a pizza is bad for society.
Personally, I don’t anything to my pizza, because I like eating pristine foods – without any pollutants.

Great show! I enjoyed it – as usual.
I liked “Voyager” from all the Star Trek versions. Star Trek wore a groove in trying to be the most politically correct show. As you mentioned they had the first interracial kiss, but that was not just a cheap shocker. They stayed consistently politically correct throughout their run.
I didn’t notice you mention “Enterprise” – the last version of Star Trek to hit the air waves. But maybe that’s just as well:)

  2. Michael:

Great show, guys. :) I’m still pretty new to Seattle, so probably couldn’t really comment on the local pizza delicacies. I’m originally from Mississippi, and down there our choices were pretty limited. Pizza Hut, Dominoes, Little Caesar’s… that sort of thing. But when I do get the opportunity to have a bit more high-class pizza, it can be a lot of hit and miss. Some seem to just try too hard. Others, though, are superb!

Star Trek is definitely a great show, although I’ve not seen the vast majority of the franchise. Those I have seen have been good, though, for the most part. I definitely have an affinity for the original series, but next generation does have it’s good points.

DI: We understand your getting up in our grills, but we stand by our declaration that nothing is better than pizza with a few added goodies (sausage, mushrooms, extra cheese, and so on). Now Greg agrees that adding sun-dried tomatoes to the pizza is a crime against humanity, but otherwise we respectfully disagree with your “purist” premise. :)

Michael: Thanks for the kind words, and please let us know if you start finding those local pizza delicacies in the Emerald City. And Greg agrees on your Star Trek take, having grown up with the original Star Trek himself.

Thanks as always for the feedback, and please keep it coming!

I’ve now had a chance to listen to the episodes of the Hawke and Dove show.

Overall, I thought they were funny and entertaining. I didn’t get the sense that they were leaning more towards the left.

The only suggestion I have, and this applies to most podcasts (including, especially my own) is to try to get the sound level consistent. When you listen on headphones like I do, and you turn it way up for the skit portion so you can hear what’s being said and then have your ears blown out by the instruments to close the show, it hurts:)

  5. admin:

Well, if YOU think it doesn’t lean more to the left, then… ;) Just kidding. As far as the sound control is concerned, we agree…it has been a big issue for a lot of the shows that we review, though over time the overall sound quality seems to have gone up, which is a good trend.

    clea, greg,

    great show!!!

greg, you’d win my wife’s gratitude with your penchant for extra cheese! they never do put enough on when you don’t ask for it in most places. my friends told a story, though, of how they ordered extra cheese on a pizza in their hometown once from a place that was generous with the cheese to begin with and it was actually too much. they threw on several slices of cheese over top of the pizza. but still, cheese is the best part of the pizza, and it’s really tough to have too much. my wife always wants to order extra cheese to avoid the thinly covered saucy flap of pizza you can get if you’re not in the know. i used to get upset b/c i thought it was a rouse, but it turns out she was right all along, as she usually is…

that’s all for me this time. looking forward to 46!!!!

    – chris

I must admit I have also had the “too much cheese” experience, but it’s so rare compared to the “where is all the darn cheese?” experience that I hesitated to mention it. The key is to have the right amount of cheese, however I have to order it to get it! :)

Have you ever thought about adding a little bit more than just your articles?
